Cost of Installing a Standby Generator

We’ve got everything you need to know about installing a generator. It costs about $8,500 to install a 15-20 kW standby generator. Use the list below to get a better idea of how much your project will cost.

1. Where you live. It’s very likely that your geographic location will impact the cost of installing a generator. If the cost of living in your immediate area is high, you should expect to pay a little more for the materials and labor.

2. Permitting. Permit requirements vary by jurisdiction. If you need a permit to install your generator, the cost of the permit should be included in the contractor’s estimate. It’s important that all of the electrical is up to code.

3. Does the generator need to power the entire home? While it is possible to install a generator that will power your entire house, this can get very expensive. In order to save money, many homeowners opt to install a generator that can power select appliances along with few essential circuits. To learn more about the difference, check out this article.

4. Wattage. What are your wattage requirements? While an 10 kW generator may suffice in an emergency, you’ll need a lot more power to run the major appliances in your home. The cost of the 30 kW generator will be considerably higher than a 15 kW generator. Your contractor will be the best resource for properly sizing the generator.

5. Fuel source.Standby generators can be powered by 1) natural gas, 2) liquid propane, and 3) diesel or gasoline. Your choice of fuel source will impact the total cost of your project. Keep in mind that installing a new gas service line may increase the cost of installation.

6. Installing a fuel tank. The installation of a fuel tank will add to the cost of the project. Installing the tank above ground is typically cheaper than installing it underground. Higher capacity, larger tanks will also come at an additional cost. However, these will not need to be re-filled as frequently.

7. Automatic transfer switch. In the event of a power failure, the automatic transfer switch will immediately transfer the electrical load to the generator. Your appliances will continue to run seamlessly, even if you’re not home. However, a generator with an automatic transfer switch is going to be more expensive.

8. Liquid-cooled vs. air-cooled generators. Air-cooled generators are typically more affordable. Although you’ll pay a premium to install a liquid-cooled generator, these units are typically more energy efficient.

9. Installing a base for the generator. What type of base will the generator be installed on? While a gravel base may be included in the cost of standard installation, pouring a concrete slab or installing a composite mounting pad will come at an additional cost.
